Why I am committed to Gusto - from Biddy
I am committed to Gusto because I love this service! At Gusto I find the space I need to connect with God; I have an opportunity to contribute my thoughts and ideas in a really supportive place; and I can be myself at Gusto. All this, as well as singing, worship and prayer! Somehow Gusto offers me the chance to slow down, and to integrate my everyday life, with all its ups and downs, into my spiritual life.
Gusto is a new monthly service which began last year in the Parish. After the U45 consultation about what younger people would like in the parish, a small group of us met at St Philip's to work out the style of service to suit us. During this time-out we focus on finding the still-point within through a combination of quiet meditation and the sharing of ideas sparking from the gospel reading.
Roberta leads the service, with Jenny taking the prayers. We open with the Gusto prayer, and some time to offer up our own private prayers to God. The gospel is read, and we share our thoughts on this reading. We then follow with a time of silence - for meditation, prayer or just quietness. Jenny gathers up our prayers for ourselves and others, and we end with the Rubber Band Blessing. We always have music and singing.
Two weeks before Gusto, we meet to plan for the service. I really enjoy the planning process too, as it is a collaborative effort with everyone having something to contribute. There is a core group of us involved in this, but everyone is more than welcome - it's very relaxed. It has been great to see some new faces coming along. There have been a couple of unexpected bonuses for me at Gusto - one has been meeting new people in the parish and the other is that I have become really intrigued by the scriptures - its so remarkable how many layers and perspectives there can be on the same reading and I am amazed at how meaningful they are to me.
I am committed to Gusto because it makes a real difference to my life. I get to recharge my spiritual batteries - so I am more able to serve God the best way I can.
I find Gusto inspirational - Try it, you might like it too!
